October 27, 2026 · 5 min read

Best books for JEE: NCERT, Physics, Chemistry and Maths books with second-hand prices on BookFlow

Ask ten JEE seniors for a book list and you will get ten different lists, each longer than the last. Most students end up with a shelf of half-finished books.

This guide keeps it short. NCERT first, then a few books for each subject, which ones you need only for JEE Advanced, and what they cost second-hand on BookFlow. Seniors sell these books every year after their exam, so you rarely need to pay full price.

Buying second-hand: what to check

  • Edition. For NCERT, get 2023 or newer. For practice books, an older edition is fine, but skip chapters no longer in the JEE Main syllabus or the JEE Advanced syllabus.
  • Answers written in. Pencil marks are fine. Answers filled in with pen make practice harder.
  • The whole series. D.C. Pandey and Cengage come in many books. Ask for a photo of all the spines.
  • Original copies only. Xerox copies, printouts and PDFs are not allowed on BookFlow.

Full sets are heavy, so meet the seller in your city, check the books, then pay. Read our safety tips first.

Finished JEE? Juniors in your city are looking for exactly these books. Post them on BookFlow for free, with 0% commission, in about 2 minutes. Our guide on how to sell used books shows every step.

Questions

Is NCERT enough for JEE Main?

For Inorganic Chemistry, almost. For Physics, Maths and the rest of Chemistry, you also need a practice book per subject and past papers.

Which is the best Physics book for JEE?

H.C. Verma to understand the ideas, then D.C. Pandey for practice. Add Cengage if you are aiming for JEE Advanced.

Do I need Irodov or J.D. Lee?

Most students do not. Irodov is for a few very strong students aiming for a top Advanced rank. J.D. Lee is a college-level book; NCERT and V.K. Jaiswal are enough for Inorganic.

Can I use old editions?

For practice books and past papers, yes. For NCERT, get 2023 or newer, because the syllabus was reduced and older books have chapters you do not need.

Where can I buy JEE books second-hand?

On BookFlow, from seniors in your city. Search for the book, chat or call the seller, and meet to check it before paying.
